CranioSacral Therapy is a Conversation

This year, we’ve been looking at the ten aspects of the Upledger CranioSacral Paradigm to better understand our work as CranioSacral Therapists. So far, we’ve discussed these ideas:

  • We are all healers.

  • We are all capable of healing.

  • Sometimes we need access to additional resources in order to heal.

  • Gentle, compassionate support can be a resource for healing.

  • Each individual heals in their own way.

Now, let’s look at the sixth principle:

With gentle touch, communication (both spoken and unspoken), and clear intention, a CranioSacral therapist can connect with a client’s inner wisdom to better understand which areas of the body are ready for change and how best to facilitate it.

Well-blended, grounded, and intentional palpation is where we begin with CST. Practitioners learn to feel the intricacies of the craniosacral rhythm, assess the extent of fascial gliding, and differentiate between active and inactive restrictions. This gentle, specific touch helps create a safe space where the nervous system can relax, and the body’s natural healing ability can be supported. The process is never rushed or forced. Practitioners follow each client’s unique healing path, responding rather than reacting to changes within the tissues and the client’s words and experience.

Communication in CST is more than just words. Gentle questions, affirmations, and redirection of attention can help clients notice emotional, psychological, or somatic patterns, but much of the exchange is nonverbal. The practitioner’s presence, attention, and intention to help create a second, silent conversation with the client’s system. This builds trust and allows deeper healing. In this space of compassion and acceptance, real change can take place.

When a practitioner starts a session with a clear purpose and grounded state, that intention shapes the whole experience. Clients often say they feel truly seen, heard, and empowered, sometimes for the first time. This kind of non-judgmental, non-directive, and accepting presence helps clients tap into their own healing resources, build resilience, and grow in self-awareness and well-being.

In short, the sixth principle of Upledger CranioSacral Therapy shows us that healing is about helping, not fixing. With gentle touch, thoughtful communication, and clear intention, the practitioner supports the client as they move through their own healing process.
